Influence of the Media

Amidst the digital era, in 2013, the creation and use of new media and new media technologies are at an all-time high. Every day it seems that new tablets, smartphones, or computers are introduced that are sleeker, smarter, and more efficient than ones before. The icing on the cake is the access that these devices grant to new media platforms such as, virtual reality chat rooms, videos, steaming media and graphics, internet radio, and podcasts to name a few. Being able to access information and interact with others, through channels such as these, can change individual perceptions and allow for a new perspective of events.

Taking into account the new media I use on a daily basis, I tend to gravitate to channels that allow me to stay connected to others and seek new information. I read and send emails constantly. When I am unable to do this from the comfort of my own home, sitting in front of my computer, I have email access via my smartphone so that I do not miss a beat. Also, I sent text and multimedia messages throughout the day when I must multitask or when phone conversations are not convenient. Often times, when I am wanting to find out what is going on in the world and want to stay in tuned to breaking news and popular culture, I will seek out media outlets via the Internet like, CNN.com, NPR.com, Bossip.com, and E! Online. Lastly, a social networking site I access almost every day without fail is YouTube.

The social media content that I read and watch does influence my views on current events that are happening locally and through the world in politics, money, and popular culture- in both positive and negative ways. Even though I may be seeking to be better informed about a matter or topic, certain views about reported happenings sometimes stem from what news or social media channel publish and is often more story than truth. That type of negative influence can leave me with a distorted perception of facts and leave me misinformed. Unlike many who seek out social sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook regularly, my social media outlet of choice is YouTube. The easy access to content and frequent updates allow me to stay tuned in to what is going on, however, depending on who is reporting the information the details may be more biased and opinionated rather than an actual account of what is truly fact.

For the most part, I find that listening to someone’s point of view about current events, product reviews, or just plain likes and dislikes, the information is often less “glamorized” than the information relayed through mainstream channels. I think creators of video content tend to be more real and transparent about their thoughts even though they might relay information that has no basis at times. Ultimately, I have learned to reconsider my initial reactions to social media content that I view and hear, and seek out other resources and information to ensure that I am getting the whole story.

I have been guilty in the past of being quick to have an opinion about information I have discovered through social media that really had no basis. At times, the influence of what I read or saw caused me to be fearful or upset and even sometimes excited and happy. In the end, the responsibility is mine when it comes to what I allow to influence and not influence my perception or perspective in positive and negatives ways. I must seek information, read, and watch responsibly.

  1. Hello,
I found it interesting that you mentioned YouTube as your outlet instead of Facebook, Twitter, etc. Upon discussing all of the social media outlets we have for some reason YouTube never entered my mind and I have used it the last few days. I guess because I have been focusing mainly on news and celebrities. It was nice to see a different outlook on social media and what it is used for.
Also, I read that you have found yourself at times feeling angry because of being misinformed. This is a common feeling that we have I think. I get that way when I feel that someone I saw as a good person has had an affair for example. I feel like that person lied to me and it is upsetting. I think it is because they go against what we stand for. The same goes for the news. Most of us wouldn't lie so we don't appreciate being lied too and when it happens it is disheartening.
Thanks for you post, it was interesting.

  2. Lauren,

Good initial post! I think you understood the point of the assignment and clearly answered the questions. I found your self reflection very open and honest; that's the first step towards growth and education. I particularly enjoyed seeing how you acknowledge your own shortcomings. This is really difficult for many people to do.

    Well done!
